UK Airport Security Rules Are Changing – Here’s What You Really Need to Know

Flying soon? Don't get caught out at security.

If you've heard that the 100ml liquid rule has been scrapped—well, yes and no. While some UK airports are rolling out new hand luggage security technology, the rules aren’t the same across the board. And right now? It’s causing a lot of confusion.

So, before you pack that full-size shampoo or breeze through the scanner with your laptop still zipped up, here’s what’s actually happening—and how to stay one step ahead.

So, what’s changed?

In 2022, the UK government announced that by June 2024, major airports would introduce next-generation security scanners. These new CT scanners (similar to hospital CT tech) give staff a clearer picture of what’s inside your bag.

With this upgraded tech, the long-standing 100ml liquid rule was expected to be relaxed. You'd no longer need to:

  • Remove laptops or tablets from your bag
  • Limit your liquids to 100ml containers
  • Put liquids in a clear plastic bag

Sounds brilliant, right?

Well, yes... but it’s not that simple just yet.

The reality in 2025: A mixed bag

As of now, not all airports have installed these scanners. And even those that have may still be enforcing the old rules until further notice. That means rules vary depending on where you’re flying from—and it’s leaving travellers frustrated at best and delayed at worst.

Airports with New Scanners Allowing Liquids and Electronics to Stay in Bags:

At these airports, passengers can keep liquids (still limited to 100ml per container) and electronics in their hand luggage during security screening:

  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Edinburgh
  • Gatwick
  • Leeds Bradford
  • London City
  • Luton
  • Newcastle
  • Southampton
  • Southend
  • Teesside

Note: While the 100ml limit per container remains, these airports no longer require liquids to be placed in a clear plastic bag.

Airports still using the old system:

If the airport isn't listed above, we'd advise you to check on their website to see if the new scanners have been installed before you travel.

If they haven't, it's business as usual:

  • Liquids must be under 100ml
  • All liquids must fit in a 1-litre clear bag
  • Tech must come out of your hand luggage

Why the delay?

The UK-wide rollout was originally set for June 2024, but many airports have faced delays in getting the new scanners up and running. So, for now, you’ll need to follow the rules of the airport you’re departing from—even if your return airport has different ones.

To make things even trickier, connecting flights could be impacted, too. If you switch airports or transfer via one that still uses the old rules, your bags might be flagged or delayed.

What does this mean for you?

Play it safe.

Until the rules are consistent nationwide:

  • Keep liquids under 100ml in a clear plastic bag
  • Pack tablets and laptops where you can easily remove them
  • Double check your departure airport’s security guidance before you travel

Feeling confused? You're not alone.

With the rules in flux and each airport doing its own thing, it’s no wonder travellers are turning up unsure of what’s allowed.
